Our Skill Set
About Madison Pediatrics
Founded in 1979, with brand new offices built in 2006… yadda, yadda, yadda.
Yes, all that history is there under one pediatrician or another, and you can read more about it in the sections below, but all the best words in the world won’t tell you anything more important than our one core value: “We care about kids!”
We know we can’t please everybody every time, but we’ll try. And, we’ll always do our best to do what’s right for you and your children.
Promise.
Meet the Gang
Our Mindset
The simple version: We care about kids!
Mission
We’re devoted to providing the best pediatric medical care in a child-friendly atmosphere with compassion and understanding.
Motto
“We care about kids!”
Standards
We always attempt to follow the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics and all currently accepted national standards of pediatric medical care.
Goals
We strive to provide the most complete and technologically advanced pediatric medical services with easy and prompt access to care.
We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our services, better tools to provide higher quality care, and fun ways to help all of our kids!
Friends
Building lasting relationships with our families is one of the best things about pediatrics. Plus, we value their feedback and support.
Advanced Facilities Design
Our office space was designed and built using advanced concepts from a variety of disciplines – ergonomics, Universal Design, contagion control, workflow and traffic flow analysis, child safety, the psychological impacts of the use of light and colors, and more. As Dr. Alexander has said, “You can hang a shingle on a shack to deliver health care, but a better space enables better care.” You can see more about some of these design advances in a little video created for the American Academy of Pediatrics’ “Pediatric Office of the Future” exhibit by clicking here: “Beyond Electronics“
Our Tools
High tech tools, small town touch.
Rural Cutting Edge
Madison Pediatrics moved into our beautiful, new-from-the-ground-up, state of the art, pediatric office on Halloween, 2006, second floor of the Park Avenue Medical Building on the campus of Madison County Hospital. (Catch the orange and black theme connection?) Come see our fun display case and the wonderful, hard-carved “Proud Heritage” sculpture in the lobby outside our office. Then, step inside to see one of the nicest, most child-friendly, and “high tech-iest” pediatric offices ever!
Electronic Medical Records
We currently use an electronic medical record (EMR). With an EMR, we eliminate paper records, decrease the chances for medical errors, enhance our abilities to provide the highest quality medical care, and provide better patient education information opportunities. We are working towards helping you to never again have to fill out ANY paperwork in our office! We realize we can not yet go completely “paperless”, but by eliminating the vast majority of paper records, we look to: improve the services we offer; have more time to interact with our families; increase integration with outside facilities including labs and “big city” medical centers; provide higher quality and more personalized patient information on virtually every medical topic; and just generally deliver the best care available.
Kid Mobile "Your Practice" App
Kid Mobile” is our full suite of tools all made ready for your mobile devices via our Kid Mobile “Your Practice” app, from our good friends, the wonderful folks at RemedyConnect. With it, you can skip playing phone tag and securely communicate with us via the app, while we can update you on important practice issues or issues related specifically to your child(ren). Plus, it has a symptom checker, medication dosage guides, resources on all kinds of health problems and topics… and, best of all, it’s FREE!

Kid Friendly Office
Our office, brand new in 2006, is still a work in progress — and probably always will be! But, it is fantastic; we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you!
The space was planned from the ground up to be “kid-friendly.” Advanced ergonomics, efficient workflow, contagion control, optimal use of technology to enhance health care delivery, even color and design psychology played major roles in the design of our new space. We are able to provide better service, accommodate practice growth, and have an office that is not only safe, but also fun, built around the specific medical and emotional needs of children. With our close proximity to hospital services, we can provide ever more convenient support and care to our kids, our families, and our whole community.

Beyond Electronics
Outer Lobby Fun
The lobby outside our office now features some fun for everyone. We have an animated display case just for the fun of it, full of toys, trains, planes, sometimes a ferris wheel or roller coaster, and much more. (Special thanks to London Signs for their help.) Across the lobby, there is a gorgeous handcrafted bench set (huge thanks to Safe Haven Custom Cabinets of London) just below an amazing work of art. This fine sculpture, handcarved from solid cherry, is entitled “Proud Heritage” and displays the beauty of London, Ohio. The artist, Richard Alan Moore, is an old friend and fantastic talent. You can see more of his art at richardalanmoore.com.
High Tech Audiology
We now offer one of the most complete set of audiology services available. We can do both routine hearing screens and comprehensive hearing examinations on children of ANY AGE! Our top-of-the-line hearing tester requires no cooperation from the patient and yet provides a very accurate measurement of the ability to hear. We can even screen newborns and children who are have language difficulties. We also have a traditional “pure tone” audiometer to perform the more traditional raise-your-hand-when-you-hear-the-tone type testing. Lastly, we have a fun “Race Car” tympanometer to accurately measure a child’s ear drum and the condition of the middle ear space (just behind the ear drum where typical ear infections occur). Kids love watching to see if they can get the race car across the finish line indicating a successful test.
Easiest Temperatures
We utilize the most wonderful way to accurately take a child’s temperature – a “temporal artery thermometer”. This new technology has been shown to be as accurate as a rectal temperature, but a whole lot easier and less traumatizing to the child. We simply place the thermometer’s probe gently against the child’s forehead, press the button, and slide it across to the temple area. Then, we lift up and place it just behind the ear lobe, release the button, and, Voila! instant temperature. It takes about two seconds, is even less intrusive than an ear thermometer (and, therefore, less frightening), is proven to be as accurate as the “gold standard” rectal temperature, and is even faster at measuring changes in core temperature. Just one more way to make the doctor’s office less scary and more child-friendly.
World's Most Accurate Scales
We use the world’s most accurate scales to measure the growth of our children. The same scales are used by the CDC, research centers, and pediatric growth specialists. Fully digital, they can interface directly with our computer system. Plus, they are easy to use and fun for the kids.
Health Nuts Media
Health issues can be complex, confusing and even scary – especially for kids. But they don’t have to be…and Dr. Alexander is working with Health Nuts Media (HNM) to help change that.
As their Chief Medial Officer since 2010, he is helping create a unique combination of entertainment and health education with a fun mission: to engage kids (and adults) with animation, games, apps, and interactive experiences to make messages that are simple, easier to understand, and fun! Founded by two Emmy Award-winning animators, HNM has assembled an impressive team – from around the U.S. and beyond – of doctors, nurses, educators, technology experts, writers, animators, game programmers, and more working together to create innovative experiences which enable kids and their families to be better informed and live healthier lives by throwing a little fun into the typically dry world of healthcare.
HNM content is used across the country by some of America’s leading hospitals and healthcare organizations. Available in multiple languages, it is also used in multiple countries across the globe.

DON’T WAIT! Call 9-1-1, go to Madison County Emergency Room (or your nearest ER), or go to the nearest pediatric urgent care facility.
Emergencies are considered to be those conditions that are serious or life threatening: loss of consciousness, severe bleeding, prolonged seizure, major trauma, etc. In the case of minor emergencies (lacerations, cuts, mild injuries, sprains, etc.), please call our office first for instructions.
Office Hours
- Monday through Thursday — 9:00 AM till 5:00 PM
- Friday — 9:00 AM till 12:00 noon
- Saturday — by special appointment only
Appointments / Missed Appointments
To help provide timely service to our patients, we prefer to schedule all visits. If you are more than 20 minutes late for your appointment, we will try to work you back into the schedule. Out of courtesy to our other patients, we may be forced to ask you to reschedule your appointment.
Missed appointments cause a disservice to other patients. If appointments are repeatedly missed without adequate notification, you may be asked to seek care elsewhere. Please call ahead if you are unable to keep a scheduled appointment so we can free up your time for other children in need.
Missed appointments (without at least 24 hours advance notice) are subject to a $30 “Missed Appointment” fee. (Second missed appointment within 1 year – $35. Third – $40.)
Insurance
We accept most insurance carriers. You must bring current insurance cards at every appointment. If you do not bring a current insurance card, you may:
- Choose to reschedule; or,
- Pay for your visit at the time of service and seek reimbursement from your insurance provider.
While we do require payment at the time of service, we are more than willing to make whatever accommodations we can for those who are uninsured.
Well Child Visits
To keep your children healthy, it is important to bring them in for regular checkups. We recommend that you call well in advance so you may choose the date that best fits your needs.
Here is our routine recommended schedule for well child checkups:
AGE
- One (1) week
- One (1) month
- Two (2) months
- Four (4) months
- Six (6) months
- Nine (9) months
- Twelve (12) months
- Fifteen (15) months
- Eighteen (18) months
- Two years (24 months)
- Two and a half years (30 months)
- Three years (36 months)
- Once yearly after three years
Your exact schedule may vary relative to your child’s specific needs.
Sick Visits
We make every effort to schedule appointments for ill children on the day that you call us. Please call our office ahead of time so that we can minimize the time that you will spend waiting. If you have a medical emergency during office hours, we will do our best to see your child immediately or refer you to the appropriate facility.
If you would like us to see more than one child, please schedule both of them when you make your appointment. Without an appointment, we may not be able to see a sick sibling right away, and you may be asked to wait while the provider sees a scheduled patient who may be waiting.
Walk-Ins
Patients who walk in with a non-emergency condition will be fit into the existing schedule as best as possible, or they will be asked to return later in the day when the schedule allows.
After Hours
For concerns after hours, we encourage you to refer to our website or our mobile app first - when possible - as they have many great child health resources, before calling the doctor.
Please save routine questions (mild illness, appointments, prescription refills) for the next business day.
For any urgent issues after regular office hours, please call our main office number (740.845.7720) for assistance using our ReachMyDoctor service.
Immunizations Policy
Recent outbreaks of measles, mumps, meningitis, whooping cough and more have shown that poor immunization rates put everyone at risk for some pretty horrible diseases. Exposure to children who are not properly immunized put other children at risk, especially kids with certain health issues, such as prematurity, cancer, asthma, immune deficiencies, heart disease, etc.
In order to protect our families as best we can, we are not able to see any children who are not properly immunized, or who are not at least in the process of becoming properly immunized. *
*Medical exemptions will, of course, be recognized.
